Service will be held at YYAimata at 11 o’clock by Mr. Lochore.
Nominations to fill the vacancies on the general committee of the Poverty Bay and Pastoral Association closeu with the secretary yesterday, and as tho five retiring mem-bers--Ylessrs A. J. Cameron C. A. Fenwick. YV. YV. Smith, Geo. YVitters, and A. iS. Wachsmann—wore the only candidates nominated, they were declared elected.
St. Andrew’s choir, assisted by the Wesley Church Choir, is rehearsing the sacred cantata “Mesisah’s Reign, under tho directorship of Mr. A. I. Hookey, and it is intended to produce the composition in St. Andrew s Church at an early date. Tho music is particularly bright and harmonious, and as tho combined strength of the choirs will be over 50 voices, the concert should provido an attractive evening.
Commencing with to-day., the-office of the Union Steamship Company will be closed at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and will in future remain open all day on Thursdays. Passengers by the southern steamer on Sundays are recommended to note, the change, and book during Saturdav morning or earlier, in order that berths may be reserved for them on arrival of the vessel from Auckland. The indoor sport of carpet howling wiil he initiated in Gisborne at the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Monday, June 28, in the. evening. The local howling clubs have been invited to send one rink each to play on the occasion, and a -general invitation lias been extended to all howlers to he present. A meeting of the committee of tho Turangamu Bowling Club will be held this evening at the Royal Hotel for making arrangements in connection with tho. acceptance of tho invitation.

At the meeting -of the Cook County Council yesterday, Cr Sherratt suggested that when the Ngatapa estate was being subdivided, the District purveyor should he asked to put tire roads of tho estate in more accessible positions tnan at present. The county engineer was instructed to interview the District Surveyor on the question.
"'I would like to know the cost of the taking of the Patutabi tramway poll; there has been a good deal or talk about it,” inquired Cr. F. J. Lysnar at the Cook County Council yesterday. "Thousands,” replied the chairman. The Clerk explained that the total cost of the poll was £224. "Just fa_ney, said Cr. Lysnar. "Two hundred and twenty-four golden sovereigns thrown away.” "Yes,” replied the chairman, "because the ratepayers inadvisedly voted against the scheme.’ -
