Mr. F. W. Riaeh, manager at Gisborne for Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co., returned on Sunday from a business trip to Samoa. Mr. Riacb was eight days in Samoa, and had a good look around the island. He visited the active volcano at Savaii at night, and described the sight as magnificent and awe-inspiring. The appointment of Major T. W. McDonald, N.Z.M., as officer commanding the New Zealand School Cadet Corps is gazetted as from June 1. It is understood that Major McDonald wil relinquish his duties as Assistant Adjutant-General at Wellington almost immediately.. He will be succeeded by Lieutenant It. 0. Chesney, R.N.Z.A. Mr A. F. Kennedy, who was recently injured in a motor accident, is reported to be progressing favorably. Some time will, however, elapse before he will be able to bo about again, at- his home in Timaru by a mother and daughter, two of liis- staunchest municipal and political supporters, who felt that they would like to express their appreciation of his services to Timaru in soiiie practical way. They presented to him a very fine walking stick of quaint appearance made of rhinoceros hide. . The present was handed over with a neat little speech and with the hope that the protector would be always carried by the recipient when returning home from midnight sittings of the House, and thus ensure his safe return to Timaru. Mr. Craigie acknowledged the gift, and promised to comply with the request that accompanied it. It is now definitely : announced in Sydney that Captain, J.. Raglan Mrodie, formerly commander of Lund's Blue Anchor liner Wakool, and one of the best known commanders visiting Australian ports, has been selected for the position of harbormaster at- Sydney, subject to passing the medical test. Ho some time ago retired altogether from the sea, and will probably shortly be definitely appointed/ The Harbor Trust received 105 applications for the position, wheh carries a salary of £250 per annum. Air G. H. Llovd, Government valuer for the AVoodville district, is among the retrenched officers of the Valuation Department.
