'Stocks on band are heavy, and widely distributed amongst agents who are pushing sales. Canterbury aiulfc North Island is at 3-'d. The beef mag* ket is quiet. Stocks of New Zealand™” beef on hand are light. New Zealand hind quarters are at 4id, fore-quarters 2fd Tbo butter market is quiet, but firm. . There is a very limited supply of New Zealand butter. New Zealand choicest is at 106 s, Australian 100 s, Danish Ills, Siberian 100 s. Ihe cheese market is weak and inactive. New Zealand white is at 61s and colored at 625. The hemp market is quiet, but steady. New Zealand good, fair grade, on spot, is at £23 ss; fair grade on spot £22; fair current Manila, £2l. Ihe Manila output was 28,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is very quiet, there is nothing doing; I cannot give quotations during present condition of the market. The -wheat market is firm, but the demand only moderate. New Zea.and long-berried wheat, ex granary per quarter, of 496!b5, 46s 6d; New Zealand short-berried wheat 45s 6d. Ihe oat market is firm, owing to the reduced supplies New Zealand short. sparrowbills, ex granary, on spot, per .quarter of 3841b5, 26s 6d'; New Zealand oats, Danish, ex granary on spot per quarter of 3201 b, 19s. The wool market is quiet and prices are slightly weaker, 36’s (low crossbreds) are at Is, 40 s (ditto) Is Id; 44’s (medium crossbreds) Is 2d: 50’s (half-breds) Is 6 5 d; o6s (quarter-bredsj Is 10d; 60 s (merinos) 2s 2id. MESSRS. W. WEDDEL AND CO.’S REPORT. Messrs. W. Weddel and Co., London, report as follows for the xiec'k ending May BUTTER. The weather has brightened up this week, and the cold easterly winds with clear skies both by day and night, is checking the growth-of vegetation, and i pastures in exposed positions are beginning to look rusty. There has been an improved demand for both lian and New Zealand butter this week, owing to the shorter supplies of Australian, New Zealand, Argentine and biberian. Second grades of butter which have been verv slew of sale lately, hare shared, to some extent, in the improvement. Strictly “choicest” quahtveoonial is very firm at last week s prices, with an advance of Is to 2s per cwt. on specially fancy goods. Arrival or Australians this week have been i-,UUJ boxes, which have gone well into consumption. From New Zealand -FO - boxes have arrived, but they will not be on the market until next week. Shipments from Australia since the last, report consist of 4000 in the ‘-Orotava, 5000 iu the “Marathon, and 0000 m the “Ayrshire.” The “Ruapehu- saved from New Zealand yesterday with only 3600 boxes. CHEESE. There is an improved demand ror both white and colored cheese, with a full shilling per cwt. advance on me WCOk ‘ FROZEN MEAT. No change can be recorded in the position of the frozen meat trade. Auy imrease in the demand resulting from tne present low prices is more than counterbalanced by the heavy stock m hand, and the market for all descriptions of meat is weak. MUTTON. New Zealanti.—Arrivals during the past two weeks amount to 123,601 carcases. There has been very little enquiry for Canterbury sheep, and^ heavy weights- in particular are neglected. Values are again slightly easier, but without bringing about any increase in the demand. Small and medium weight carcases are now offered at 3 11-16 d per lb; the 56 to 64 lbs grade being quoted at 3id per lb. Heavier, carcases are not enquired for at -vd to ~ 2£d per lb." Best North Island sheep are again weaker in value and are a slow sale at from 2Jd to 3|d, according to weight. Secondary carcases are freely offered at 24d to 2fd per lb. Ewes of wood quality and medium weight selquietlv at 2Jd to 2 3-lQd per lb.
