SLY-CROG SELLING IN WELLINGTON
A TWENTY POUND FINE. (Per Press Association WELLINGTON, Juno 24. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., Mary Ann Wright,, known as Mary Jane Barrie, and David Barrie appeared as defendants in a case arising out of a raid upon a Taranaki Place boarding house. The charge against the former accused was that on the 15th of May, she unlawfully sold intoxicating liquor to James Wykes without having a license to d$ so. David Barrie was charged that (1) being the occupier of the Paragon boarding house he was privy to the sale of intoxicating liquor on 15th. of May; and (2) with being found on tlie 29tli May on unlicensed premises, to wit, the Paragon boarding house, when the liquor was seized. Ho was deemed to have been on such premises for the purpose of illegally dealing in liquor. The case against the female defendant was taken first.
Station-Sergeant Darby prosecuted, and Mr A. L. Herdman appeared for the defendant.
Evidence was given by several witnesses to prove the sale of liquor by accused.
Sub-Inspector Phair gave evidence that he. with several constables, raided the boarding house. Ho seized 88 bottles of liquor, consisting of beer, whisky and gin, nearly-all being taken' from the accused’s bedroom. In another room a man was in bed, with six empty beer bottles on the floor alongside him and another partly consumed. Witness remarked to him, “You appear to be having a good time,” and the reply was, “I always do have a good time.” The accused was convicted and fined £2O and costs.
The hearing of the charges against David Barrie was adjourned.
