SECOND DAY.
[PI-11l I'itl.SK ASSOCIATION. J PALMERSTON N., Juno 23. The Mapawatu Winter Show wa3 continued to-day in fine but gloomy weather. The attendance was again very large, excursion trains bringing largo contingents of visitors from different parts of the district. Judging was completed to-day in the poultry utility classes and fat stock. The principal winners in poultry, Messrs R. Bannister (Brahams) and ■E. H, Holland, Bunnythorpe (Langshans), divided honors in Leghorns with B. McCormick (Hastings;, Aitchison and Son (Palmerston North), and J. Green (Bulls). S. It. Lancaster was the principal exhibitor in Plymouth Rocks; H. Pickering (Palmerston North) being the most successful competitor in white varieties. A. H. Guthrie (Wellington) secured all first prizes for black Orpingtons. Mrs S. Reid (Lower Woodlands) and Mrs W. Hislop (Wanganui) divided honors in buff Orpingtons. C. H. Pickering -was the only exhibitor in white. In silver Wyandottes there was a big competition. The successful exhibitors w'ere the Wellington breeders, Iremonger and Currie, while Mrs Hislop (Wanganui) and A. Hickling (Mangahao) also secured first in brown. In whites C. Hansard (Dannevirke) and J. Marton the other firsts. T. liar vie (Palmerston North) and C. A. Burnett divided honors in partridgo varieties. Two Mangatatingokoa breeders, R. A. Williams and "TSarah Cowan, divided honors in Minorcas. In brown. 'Leghorns R. Young and E. Broughton (Bulls), E. H. Holland and J. D. Iremonger secured firsts. In any other variety of Leghorns, H. _ Magnuson (Eketahuna) and J. Goodwin (Dannevirke) w’ere the most successful exhibitors. The. entries this year were not as numerous, but the judge, Mr Casey, of Lower Hutt, considered the quality throughout excellent. In fat stock, F. 3. Mcßae and H. T. Arkwright were the principal prize-takers in the fat sheep classes, and E. White and Slack Bros, in pigs. A number of addresses were given at the dairy conference in connection with the show. Mr. Cuddie spoke on the necessity of pasteurisation; Mr. B. C. Ashton. Chief Government Chemist, on manuring pastures; Mr. F. Gillanders (Momohaka), on feed for dairy cows, its -production and nutritive value ; and Mr. O. J. Reakes, Chief Government Veterinarian, spoke also on pasteurisation. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, addressed the conference on agriculture generally. A meeting cf Ayrshire breeders selected persons qualified as judges, and the pccretarv was instructed to write to the Agricultural and Pastoral Associations for a list of persons who had acted as judges, and asking that the indues selected By the meeting should be chosen at next show.
