WORK FOR THE UNEMPLOYED
A “Times” reporter yesterday in quired from Mr, Armstrong, enginee for the construction of the Gisborne Rotorua railway, as to what employ ment would be found for the 100 mei it was proposed should be put on t« the work, to relieve the unemployed distress. Mr. Armstrong replied thp he had only received instructions o; telegram, and knew no more than wha appeared in the “Times” on Wednes dav morning; but work would be fouu< for sonic cf the men at plate-laying o tho earthwork already done, and tb rest would be sent forward to prepar new construction work. Mr. M. Cal mody, of the local Labor Office, infornj ed the reporter that he. had not rf ceived any instructions in the matte} hut when the men were, wanted would give preference to local men;J as to prevent many unemployed coil ing from other parts of the Dominiojj Already, he said, about 400 men wef employed on tlic line, and they woulc as far as he knew, be kept on as lorj as the vote of money passed, for tlf work was unexpended./ / .
