The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. FRIDAY, JULY 2,1909. MR MARCHANT’S SEWERAGE SCHEME.

There 'will be general satisfaction that the sewerage scheme devised by Mr Marchant has been cordially endorsed by so practical an engineer as Mr Edwin Cuthbert, of Christchurch. Mr Cuthbert is a gentleman who has for a very long term been in charge of the entire drainage scheme of the southern city, and he must obviously have had exceptional opportunities for testing the efficacy of any system or systems that have been utilised by the. Christchurch local authorities. Mr Cuthbert substantially endorses the views placed before the Council by Mr Marchant, and whilst he suggests certain amendments, they are not of a radical nature and'do not interfere with the general principles laid down. The estimate of cost made by Mr Marchant is, in Mr Cuthbert’s opinion, quite ample to complete the scheme. The report referred to was published yesterday, and shows that the author has treated exhaustively with the various points, and it will be noted that all the questions which were specifically put by the Council have been answered in a manner that confirms the soundness of the Marchant scheme. Amongst the fresh suggestions made the most notable is that, in Mr Cuthbert’s opinion, provision should be made for flushing out the pipes from the (water supply S3’stem at least once a week, and that the wages of a man to attend to this must be added to the cost of maintenance. Reports are also to be expected from the. Chief Health Offica and the Chief Government Engineer, and it is to be hoped that these will he shortly available so that some definite action may be taken in pushing forward our drainage proposals.
