A Taranaki sheepfarmer had an unpleasant reminder the other day of the •■rapacious habits of the hawk. One of lus best ewes had become fastened in a little gully, and whilst lying there helpless it was savagely attacked by a hawk. Both eyes (were plucked out. The probability is that the poor beast panted from the pain, and extended its tongue. The hawk returned to the attack, and tore out practically • the whole -of the tongue. The next stop was to bite pieces out of the animal’s lip. The animal, when found by the owner, .was in such a shocking state that it had to be immediately destroyed.
