FOOTBALL.

TOWN COMPETITION. The* Saturday championship matches ■were continued at the Domain on Saturday in pouring rain, and in the pres- . fence of a very smalt' attendance of spectators. ;. .. ; V' SENIORS. ;V '.UNITED (3) v. Y.M.C.A. (3). The ground was in a terribly sloppy condition, and parts of it were completely under water. The game was just la series of scrambling rushes, the state of the ground and ball rendering anything like good football an impossibility. Y.M.C.A. had the best of the play throughout, but United scored p*-r medium of C. b ollock before the first spell finished. Luttre.ll failed at goal. After the interval Y.M.C.A. kept United busily defending, and Campbell scored at the corner. Thekick at goal was a failure. Y.M.C.A were nearly over on several occasions, and had two or three resultless shots at,goal from penalty kicks. No further scoring took place, and the game, which was most uninteresting, ended ill a draw. ' • " , Mr. L. F. .Williams controlled the game. JUNIORS. KAITI-CITY (9) v. Y.M.C.A. (0). It was rather unfortunate that this game was iplayed in the wet, as these teams have twice met, the result being a draw, so that a good game was anticipated had it been fine on Saturday. Kaiti-City kicked off and Y.M. C.A., by good kicking, almost immediately caused City, to force. C. Pollock, from a good speculative kick, sent the ball up the field .after the. kick off and, with good forward play, it was forced out in Y.M.C.A.’s twenty-five. Y.M.C.A. managed to get the ball a little way down the field, when Bristow received and sent a good kick near Y.M.C.A. goal line. Y.M.C.A. fullback, August, saved well, and sent the hall to centre. A strong combined forward rush of Ivaiti-City carried the ball in front of Y.M.C.A. goal, where P. O’Neill scored a neat drop-kick. Y.M.C.A. then rallied and had City defending, but were not able to score, and the spell ended City 4, Y.M.C.A. nil; In the second spell Y.M.C.A. were prominent for the first five minutes, the backs getting in some nice kicks, but after this the superiority of the City forwards told, and Y.M.C.A. had to force repeatedly. From a forward rush Hargraves got over near Y.M.C.A. goal and Swain kicked, an easy goal. Y.jM.C.A. were then beateii and bad City backs not kicked so hard they 'would 'have been able to score several times. The light failed in the closing spell, and the game ended in midfield. Mr jU. Osborne controlled the game: 1 I THIRDS. Y.M.C.A. (35) v. KAITI-CITY (0). Y.M.C.A. were too strong a; combination, in this match, and _ proved themselves superior by 35 points. 1 ; to nil. For +ho winners tries were scored bv Paku 12), Winter (2), Mill (2), J&edell, Wildish, and Ngire; four were converted, two- by Bloomfield and two by Paku. Mr. M. Osborne refereed. COUNTRY COMPETITION. SENIOR GRADE.' MAKAURI (5) v. TAKITIMU (3). The polo paddock at Makauri, where the country matches were resumed on Saturday, was -a veritable quagmire, and the iplayers found • it extremely difficult to retain their footing. There was an incessant downpour of ram, and anything jibe good play was out of the question. In the first ten minutes Takitimu score'd, and the kick- at goal was a failure. Half-time was called with Takitimu leading by three points. In the second spell- the referee had to caution a couple of players on either side. Campbell was disabled, and had to leave the field, and Makauri finished the game with 14 men. Just prior to the call of time Makauri pressed hard, and Witters forced his way over the line and grounded the ball. Ryan added tt** extra points, giving his side the lead and victory. The try scored i,v Witters was loudly disputed by the opposing side. No further scoring took place, -and the game ended in favor of Makauri by the narrow margin of two points. Mr. W.
