STEAMERS IN COLLISION
N.Z. SHIPPING CO.’S WHAKATANE AND FRENCH STEAMER. , WHAKATANE BEACHED ATDOVER. United Press Association— Copyright (Received July 5, 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 5. The French cargo steamer , Circe, struck the Whakatane, bound for Auckland, amidships . during a thick fog off Dungeness. The Whakatane’s engine-room was flooded, and she commenced to settle down, but was kept afloat with the assistance of tugs. Meanwhile the Circe brought the Whakatane’s passengers to Dover. These, with the mails and some, valuables stud horses, will be transferred to another of the sa.'mo company’s liners. The Whakatane was towed to Dover and beached on arriving. She appeared badly down by the stern, while the crew were mustered on the forepart. All the damage is below the, waterline.
[The New Zealand Shipping Company’s Whakatane is a vessel of 5902 tons, and is| commanded by Captain Hemming. She was to have left London for New Zealand ports, via Hobart, on Sunday last.]
