NEW SOUTH WALES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. M. SCOTT BEATS C. L. MACKENZIE The final tie of the New South Wales amateur championship was ,played on the links of the Royal Sydney Golf Club, at Rose Bay, on Saturday, June 12th, resulting in a comfortable win for M. Scott (R.M.C.G.), who defeated C. L. Mackenzie (Hunter’s Hill G.C.), by 11 up and 10 to play. The day was dull and gusty, and the. wind blew at times with the force of a strong gale. The moderate breeze of the morning increased considerably alter luncheon, nevertheless, as Scott himself put it, he played as well as he ever played in his life, and to have made a close match of it Mackenzie 'would have had to play ■far above his form if he was to have./ any chance of standing against the game put up by his opponent; and so, in the natural order of things, the Syd- ; ney man went for everything, and tried to play golf quite above his own standard/ and in the result he was left worse off than if he had stuck to, his own consistent, steady game. In any case, he could hardly have expected to beat Seott. It was rather a case of saving as many holes as he could before the end came. Scott stood S up at the close of the morning round. The, afternoon round was over at the eighth hole, at which Scott won 11 up and 10 to play. Scott was in excellent form after luncheon, his driving being nearly perfect. .Going to tho first hole the Victorian’s tee shot was to the left on the edge of the fairway, while Mackenzie’s took him into the rough, to the right. Scott got well over bunker on to the green with his second, and Mackenzie was on the edge of the green with his third. Scott missed a 3ft putt for a four, but still was able to win in 5 to 6. Scottls drive to the second hole was a splenuid shot, outdistancing his opponent by quite 50 yards, and he was on the green with his second. Mackenzie’s approach shot overran the hole. Scott had a 9ft putt for a four, but failing to hole it Mackenzie was { able to halve in 5. At the third Scott I was bunkered, while Mackenzie, with his drive, was beyond the hole, and just off the green. Scott overran by Bft. or 9ft., ancl Mackenzie followed him. Scott missed his putt, and Mackenzie had a 4ft putt for a win, but missed it, and the hole was halved in 4. Going to the fourth hole Scott again drove well, and was just off tho green with his second when Mackenzie had played three, and the. hole was halved in 5. At the fifth Scott’s drive went straight up the fairway, while Mackenzie missed his, and was in the rough, and then* with his third he overran the hole to the far edge of the green. Scott’s second was a beautiful shot,- which left him within 12ft of the hole, and he was down in 4 to Mackenzie’s 6. Scott won the next, and then lost the seventh, Mackenzie holing a long putt. Scott then took the eighth in 3, and won the match and the championship by 11 up and 10 to play. The approximate scores were as follows : —Morning.— ’ M. Scott. Out —4,5, 3,4, 8,3, G, 5, 4 37 Home—s, 4,3, 5,4, 5,5, 5, 4 40 77 C. L. Mackenzie, Out—s, 4,4, 6,5, 2,6, 4,5, 41 Home—s, 5,5, 7,4, 6,5, 6, 5 48 89 —Afternoon. — M; Scott—s; 5,4, 5, 4. 2,7, 3 35 C- L. Mackenzie —6. 5,4, 5, 6,5, 5, 4 40 Scott’s win in this event must always rank as one of his best achievements at the game. The conditions of tho event provided the severest test of golf that has so far been devised, and, besides, Scott has not before been asked to meet a player among the amateurs who possesses the brilliance of Gallacher and has such amazing length at' his command.
