A curious incident relating to international shipping transactions was reported in Tyneside in May. A steamer was required on a Government form of charter for a period of one year by a Tyne firm of shipbrokers. Recently negotiations were opened out with the South Country representatives . of a German firm for acquiring a suitable vessel. Eventually the Tyne firm received a telegraphic communication from the agents intimating, among other things, that'in the event of war breaking out between Germany and England, during the running of the charter, each party was to have tire option of cancelling it. Inquiries show that the vessel was of German nationality, and the owners had their place of business near a German naval p irt. The Tyneside firm subsequently received a confirmatory letter, but they could not see their way to accept the f;tearner in view of this clause, and the vessel was not chartered. Negotiations w ; ere afterwards successfully carried through for a steamer of similar topnage and a different nationality.
