ODDFELLOWS’ PRESENTATION.

WELLINGTON, July 7. Bro. Kershaw, corresponding secretary to the Wellington District of Oddfellows, on retiring from that position to-niglit at a large representative meeting of Oddfellows, was presented with an illuminated address and gold watch in appreciation of his services to tho Order. Particular reference was made to the good work he had done in the establishment of the New Zealand Branch of the Manchester Unity. AN IMPERIAL MISSION. Sir Charles Lucas and Mr. A. A. Pearson, representing the Colonial Office in London, arrived in AVcllington from Sydncv to-day. The object of their mission to various parts of tho Empire is to get into closer and more personal touch with colonial Governments and with public men with a view to promoting a better understanding. They will leave for tho South in a few days. MOTOR CAR DRIVERS FINED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. Several motor car drivers were fined to-day for driving at excessive speeds in the town and suburbs. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS. The question of religious instruction in schools was again under discussion at the meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board to-day, when a statement prepared by ministers of various denominations at their recent conference was laid on the table for consideration. The chairman said that the report broke no new ground, and he did not see what the Board could do in the matter, and after discussion the Board decided to receive the statement. THE TIAIBER COAIAIISSION. Asked by press representatives today when he expected the report of the Timber Commission to be made public, Mr. Ell, M.P., said that he did not know, but he was of opinion that there was no reason for delaying its publication. It was bis intention to communicate with Alinisters on the subject. ALLEGED THIEF ARRESTED. TIAIARU, July 7. A voung Timaru man named Spurdon lias been arrested as the actual thief of a barrel of whisky stolon from the Crown Hotel, for which four seamen are in custody. SALE OF DAIRY FACTORY. The South Canterbury Dairy Factory is being sold in sections. The central factory and some creameries have changed owners, the purchasers being an ouDosition firm who have been churning homo-senarated cream.
