THE POLICE FORCE.
In dealing with the charges brought recently in Parliament against our police force we suggested that it would be difficult for the Government to avoid setting tip a commission to inquire into these allegations, and the appointment of Mr. H. W. Bishop as Commissioner seems to us to meet admirably the necessities of the case. The reference includes the organisation and control of the police force, its discipline and efficiency, the conduct and • character of its members, the principles followed in enrolment and promotion, and the operation of any political influence or “improper interference” in connection therewith. These topics appear to us to cover the whole ground • comprehensively enough, and there is every reason to believe that the re- • port, when available, will provide a mass of extremely valuable evidence as to the condition of a branch of the Public Service on the efficiency of which the maintenance of private rights and the defence of the property and life of the average citizen chiefly depend.— “Auckland Star.”
