WEDNESDAY, JULY 7. ‘ Captain Chrisp and Mr. F. W. Riach presided over a sitting of the Police Court yesterday. . DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, who did not appear, was convicted of drunkenness and ordered to forfeit the amount of his bail, £l. VAGRANCY. James Crimmins, a young man, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person and with, having insufficient lawful means of support. The accused pleaded not guilty. Detective Rawle said he liad known tlie accused for the past two years. Ihe accused loafed about the hotels, and had done no work for the past six weeks. Witness had -warned the man to get out of the town. The man pretended to be drunk so as to get into the confidence of drunken men. Witness had had several complaints that the man was begging money. Among the accused’s effects was a pack of cards. ' James Porter, clerk at the Albion Hotel, said he knew the accused, who was in the company of a man who complained that the accused took a £5 note from him. Constable Dandy said he had frequently seen the accused in the company of half-drunken men. He had not seen the man do any work. . Constable Pratt gave similar evidence. The accused admitted previous convictions for theft, assault, theft from the person, and other serious offences. The accused said that since- he last e out of -gaol he had been work-, at Opotiki and Te Karaka.
