AUSTRAL 35 v. ROYERS 17. Teams representing the Austral and Rovers Clubs met yesterday afternoon on the Grey Street ground. The opening period of the _ game saw some fast and even play, both sides playing with great determination. One of the best things of the day was a capital goal kicked by J. Wack, which was the only sixer the Rovers scored. Swann’s ruck play in the first half was a big factor in the success of tlie Australs. After half-time a steady rain set in, and spoiled the play, good marking and kicking being out of..the Question. The Australs made the best of the adverse conditions, and put on several goals in succession. They played with better system than their opponents throughout, and were slightly the heavier side, eventually winning bv 5 goals 5 behinds (35 points) to 2 goals 5 beliinds (17 points). ~ For the Australs, Swann following, H. Wack defending and roving. Woodberry roving, Webster (cajitain) following, Pollock and Jenkins forward, were responsible for the bulk of the work, and for the Rovers J. Wack (captain) was consistent in good play throughojit; Hansen followed well; Smith was reliable in goal; Williams showed up well; F. Wack worked hard to avert defeat; and W. Tate was a smart junior. The goal-kickers were: Australs, H. Wack (2), Webster, Pollock, and Jenkins; Rovers, J. Wack. Mr. Kuring officiated as central umpire and kept the game well in hand, besides giving useful instruction to junior players. BRITISH ASSOCIATION. % This association is making satisfactory progress, and now has a membership of over fifty. A practice will be held at the Cobden Street ground on Saturday, where the secretary (Mr. A. H. Scroggie) was engaged in putting up the goal-posts yesterday afternoon. NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. (Feu Press Association .1 WELLINGTON, July 8. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night decided to inform the Nelson Union that if a person who acted as gatekeeper played football, ho would become a professional, but could apply for reinstatement as an amateur. It was decided that referees’ decisions must be given in accordance with the laws of the game,- and it was resolved to inform the Auckland Union that the New Zealand Union understood that games there were not being played in accordance with the laws, and to point out that no affiliated union had power to do this. The Hawke’s Bay Union is to be asked for evidence concerning the five years’ disqualification of two players for using bad language to a referee. Hawke’s Bay application for removal of a disqualification for five years imposed on a native two years ago for bad language and inciting to rough play was refused. Evidence is to be sought from Buller in reference to- two disqualifications. The Otago and Wellington Unions notified that the date provisionally fixed for the inter-island match, August 21st, did not clash with their arrangements.
The Otago’s Union’s disqualification of a Zingari player for striking other players was made general. Mr. F. T, Evans resigned from the South Island selection committee, and Mr. S. Wilson was appointed in his stead.
