KILLED BY A TRAMCAR. (Per Press Association.' AUCKLAND. July 9. An elderly man. named Samuel Gee. aged 72 years, who was knocked down bv a tram in Queen Street on Wednesday, died in the hospital this morning. SAFE ARRIVAL OF DEFIANCE. The brigantine Defiance, from Kaipara, which was cut adrift by the steamer Awaroa while in tow on account of the heavy weather, arrived at Auckland this morning. SLY-GROG SELLING. WELLINGTON, July 9. Leonard Russell pleaded guilty to a charge of sly-grog selling at Taranaki, and was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. MINISTER FOR PUBLIC HEALTH. WELLINGTON. July 9. The Hon. D. Buddo, Minister of Public Health, left for South to-night to attend to Departmental matters in Christchurch and receive a deputation of fruitgrowers in his own electorate. THE CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 9. The burglar who visited several offices iu Gloucester Street on Wednesday night did not apparently coniine himself to that locality. Another office in the centre of the city was broken into and the safe opened, but the booty obtained was not worth the effort. MOTORISTS FINED. Two motorists, Dr. Diamond and Mr. T T. Hensmann, were each fined 20s to-day on charges of drivng their cars at an excessive speed. The police are instituting a crusade against reckless drivers. ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT. Frederick Marshall, ex-manager of the United Farmers’ Loal Company, was charged at the Police Court to-day with, on or about January 27th, destroying a ledger and cash-book with intent to defraud the United Farmers' Coal Company. After evidence had been given, the accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. The accused was also cited for trial on three charges of failing to account for moneys received on behalf of the company. A MAN’S BODY FOUND. NELSON, .July 9. The. body of a man was found this afternoon on Rabbit Island, close to the city. It has not yet been identified, but it is supposed to be that of one of the victims of the recent canoe fatality, in which two lives were lost. PROPOSED ELECTRIC TRAMWAYS ‘ FOR INVERCARGILL. INVERCARGILL. July 9. At a meeting of the Town Council and other local bodies to-niglit it was resolved to recommend the various bodies to ask the ratepayers for £75,000 to instal a system of electric tramways, provided Sir Joseph Ward, the holder of concessions, accepts £IOOO for his rights.
