OBITUARY.

THE MARQUIS DE GALLIFFET

(Received July 10, 1 a.m.) PARIS, July 9. The Marquis de Galliffet, the wellknown French general, is dead.

[Gaston Alexandre Auguste, Marquis do Galliffet, was born in Paris, on tho 23rd January, 1830. He entered the army in 1848, and was appointed a general of division'in 1875. He served in the Crimea; In Italy in 1859 he was four times wounded and was mentioned in despatches four times. He fought in Mexico between 1862-67, and was severely wounded at Puebla in 1853. Ho saw service in Algeria, at intervals, between the years 1859-73. During the Franco-Prussian War, in the Army of the. Rhine, he was taken prisoner at Sedan. He was on active service in Africa-in 1872, and in 1879 was appointed to command the 9tli Army Corps; He was made a member of the Grand Council of War in 1882, and was appointed Minister 'of .War in 1899. He received decorations of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, and the Military Medal.]

CATHOLIC BISHOP OF MAITLAND

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 9. Cable advice has been received by Bishop Lenihan announcing the death of .Bishop Murray, of Maitland, New South Wales.

[The Right Rev. James Murray, D.D., was the first Bishop of Maitland. He was born in Barndurrig, Wicklow, Ireland, on tho 25tli March, 1828. go received his education at Urban College of Propaganda, Rome, and was ordained as -priest in 1852. He was appointed secretary to Archbishop, afterwards Cardinal Cullen, Dublin, in 1852, holding that position until 1865, when he was consecrated Bishop of Maitland by Archbishop Cullen, on the 14th November. 1865.]
