The Kia Ora Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., are' advertising for a secretary. Rev. M. Cockerill left for south by the s.s. Monowai this. morning to take up his new charge. The members of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board returned to Napier by the s.s. Monowai this morning. The racehorse My Darling was sold privately to Mr. Johnson, of the Roseland Hotel, Makaraka, on Saturday afternoon. A man arrested on Saturday night for using obscene language and another for resisting the police, will be brought up at the Police Court this morning. Mr. John Fuller, of the Fuller Proprietary, has concluded the purchase of the freehold of the Auckland Opera House for the sum of £22,000. Messrs W. Morgan and G. E. Darton left for Napier by the s.s. Monowai this morning to attend the monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay Education Board. The revenue collected at the Gisborne Custom-house last week was: — Customs duties £264 14s 4d, beer duty £3l 7s, light dues £4 10s 4d, shipping fees £2 15s 6d, other receipts £1 19s 6d ; total £305 6s Bd. The chess match which was to have been played by telegraph between the Gisborne and Hamilton Chess Clubs on Saturday night was, owing to the boisterous weather, postponed to a date to bo fixed. A special general meeting of tho Poverty Bay Rowing Club will be held at 8 p.m. to-day for the purpose of considering business in connection with the social, tho proposed new club-house, and the procuring of new boats. Messrs Malcolm and Co., auctioneers, only got through two-thirds of their catalogue of fruit trees and shrubs on Saturday last. The balance, about 200 lots very choice sorts, will be sold tomorrow'at 1.30 p.m., without reserve. The young woman, Edith McLeod, who is alleged to have attempted suicide at Motu on May Ist, and who has since been an inmate of the hospital, will, in all probability, be brought before Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., at the Police Court this morning and charged with the offence. At the Trades Council meeting on Saturday night, Mr. Hall moved—'•‘That this Council congratulates Mr. Hogg on the honorable stand he has taken, in making a sacrifice by resigning from Cabinet rank rather than forfeit the right of acting up to liis principles.” The proposition was seconded by Mr. Gratton and carried. The members of the Gisborne Ladies’ Hockey Club assembled at a social evening in Whinray’s Hall on Friday evening to bid farewell to one of their number, Miss Nellie Cockerill, who is leaving Gisborne. On behalf of her clubmates, Mr. 0. R. Olsen, presented Miss Cockerill with a lady’s watch as a small token of their good wishes. The following passengers had booked last - night by Messrs Redstone and Sons’ coaches, leaving this morning: For Waipiro: Mrs. Saunders, Messrs Blodom and S. S. Williams; for Tokomaru : Mr. Sharp; for Tologa: Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. M. Fitzgerald and girl; for Tiniroto : Messrs O’Halloran, G. Fennimore, W, Duggan, Wheddon, Allen, O’Challa. Constable Dandy bad a most dangerous and unpleasant experience on Saturday in the rough weather. He was out serving sonic summonses, and in attempting to cross the nboded Waterfall creek his horse got carried off its feet and, with his rider, was washed a considerable distance down the creek and over a submerged fence across it. He eventually reached the hank in safety, fortunately unhurt. At the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board in Gisborne on Saturday Mr Aokroyd asked that the ballot for the Ngatapa sections bo held before March next so that the successful applicants could arrange to get stock before the winter set in. The Commissioner said the present owner did not go out until March, but the Board might arrange with Mr Sydney Williamson to allow the successful applicants to inspect the sections before they went into possession if the ballot was held early in the year.. In all probability some such arrangement would be arrived at. Reports continue to filter through of the damage'sustained by tlie country districts as the result of the recent exceptional storm (says the “Auckland Star”). At tlie Howick beaches the storm left considerable wreckage in its train. Mr. F. Allen, of Mellon’s Bay, saw liis verandah, measuring 40ft by Bft, carried bodily away, .and cut a double chimney clean off at tlie ridge of the, house before it was deposited in the back yard. Te Aroha also felt the storm on Saturday and, although it was not so severe in town a& in the out-districts, it was sufficiently severe to cause a complete cessation of business. A number of shop windows were shattered and soveral small buildings wore blown down and destroyed. The contractor for the new bridge (Mr. Murphy) bad liis camp on the west side of the river completely .wrecked. An exceptionally heavy rainfall caused the river to rise to a height approximately' equal' to that reached by the groat Hood two years or more ago. At Ruaka'ka. tlie roof of the residence of Mrs. Willis was blown off. While the schooner 'Greyhound was at Houhora she dragged her anchors and was blown ashore at half-tide, remaining aground until tlie return oi the tide, when she was floated off without sustaining damage.
