The general feeling at the Thames m connection with the development of the deep levels and the Government subsidy of £SOOO, is that the Cabinet lias dealt fairly in the matter, and the best course to pursue is to take immediate advantage of the offer and proceed to work at once. The whole future of the field depends on this work. The opinion is generally that there should be no further delay. OLD AGE PENSIONERS REFUSED WORK. FEILDING, July 10. Old age pensioners applying to the Borough Council for work on account of slackness of employment have been refused, because they cannot be exacted to da a fair day’s laboring work. The Mayor explains that it would be unfair to general laborers. By the award the Council is compelled to pay -a rate which the applicants admit they are not worth. The Mayor thinks the Government should introduce legislation exempting old age pensioners from all awards as a part solution of the difficulty. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. WELLINGTON, July 10. At the Supreme Court sentences were passed on prisoners who had pleaded guilty in the lower court as follows; Stephen Kotze, four months, for forgery; Robert' Arnott, two years, for indecency at Levin; William McKay, alias Robinson, for forgery and uttering, four years on each of the two charges,sentences to be concurrent there were-several previous convictions against McKay); A. Barrow, from Dannevirke, nine months, for breaking, entering,, and theft; JAlm James O’Connor, forgery and uttering, sentence deferred; Michael Brennan, 18 months,, far robbery at St. Mark’s Church.
