WORK AT NAPIER. [Pek i’lu-sp .Association. NAPIER, July 12. With a view of alleviating unemployed distress, the County Council today decided to put big road contracts in hand immediately, temporary work has been found for the most deserving, and all actual cases of distress have been relieved. PUBLIC MEETING AT NAPIER. At a public meeting to-night an animated discussion took place as to the actual extent of unemployment in the borough. The Mayor (Mr. J. Vigor Brown. M.P.) said that the number of deserving cases among Napier residents was not large. Some speakers expressed the contrary view. Eventually a committee of nine citizens was set up to administer the funds raised for the relief of cases of distress. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. WELLINGTON, July 12. The Minister for Labor says that only local men are to be put on the Mosgiel railway duplication works. Ho lias given* instructions to increase the number of hands to 100 if there are sufficient necessitous cases. Not more than 100 could be profitably employed on such a work at this time of the year. Speaking to a "Post” representative, the Hon. J. A. Millar said that Mr. G. P. Donnelly had let contracts to have an area of bush felled at Wairamarama, Hawke’s Bay, sufficient to provide work for 30 or 40 men until October. “If,” ho added, “more of our settlers could bo found to go in for similar development- works, it would greatly assist the Government in solving the unemployed difficulty.” RELIEF TO BE CONTINUED IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, July 12. The City Council to-night' resolved to continue relief works for tho unemployed for another fortnight. It was stated that at Wellington the Relief committee was receiving a £ for £ subsidy, and the Mayor promised to make enquiries on the matter.
