MONDAY, JULY 12. (Before Mr W. A'. Barton, S.M.). DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, who did not appear to answer a charge of being drunk on Saturday night, was fined 18s with costs 2s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A young wom<yr named Edith McLeod was charged that on May Ist last she did attempt to commit suicide by shooting herself with a pea-rifle at Motu. The accused pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Sergeant Hutton said the act was the result of a love affair, and the girl took a pea-rifle and shot herself in the breast. She had since beecn in the Gisborne Hosptal. The girl was subject to strange mental derangements at certain periods, hut her mother was prepared to look after her in the future. The Bench said the girl had suffered a great deal through her foolish act and that there was no need to inflict further punishment. The accused would he bound over to come up for sentence when called upon if a surety of £5 was entered into on her behalf. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. George Wilson, a youth, pleaded guilty to a charge of using obscene language near the Albion Hotel on Saturday night. His Worship said the language used was most disgusting and the accused would be fined £3 with costs 7s, in default 7 days’ imprisonment. OBSTRUCTING THE POLICE. Joseph Glen Henderson admitted having obstructed Constable Dwyer in the execution of his duty while he was arresting the previous accused. The accused said he was under the influence of liquor at the time. A fine of £1 with 2s costs was inflicted, in default 48 hours’ iirmrisonment.
