In a letter to the “Eltham Argus ' H. Grocott writes:—“l would like to draw public attention to the heroic conduct of the little lad Bill at the disastrous lire here. He is hut a lad of fourteen rears, and his action and presence of mind would do credit to any man On hearing the cries from the house he ran with all speed into the room, which he found to be suffocatingly full of smoke. and without a moment’s delay attempted to extinguish the flames with which his .mother was enveloped by means of blankets iiom the bed. Finding this impossible, he dragged his mother out of the room, and then succeeded in accomplishing his painful task. His right hand and wrist are severely burnt, and he must, have suffered intensely 1 . Such conduct and presence of mind from a mere lad is worthy of our highest commendation.”
