The question o$ the subsidy to be given by the Government towards the relief of the unemployment difficulty in Wellington was considered by the Cabinet yesterday afternoon. “We have not considered the proposals of the. deputation with regard to making the recreation grounds or the road to the Signal Station,” said the acting-Prime Minister subsequently, “and the question of the Government’s contributing towards the cost of fever hospitals will have to await a full l meeting of the Cabinet. We have decided to give a subsidy of £2 for £l, up to £3600, towards the cost of carrying out the necessary extension works afi V ictoria College, a-nd that we regard as a national work. The College is in an unfavorable position in regard to endowments, compared with other .university colleges, and its fees are lower, and the work is a necessity.” Seven married men were sent to tlie railway relief works at Stratford yesterday bv the Labor Department, and on Monday toil arc to he sent to kelson to work on the Iviwi section of the Midland railway. , The Wellington Citizens’ Relief Fund is now up to about £B6O. THE POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTCHURCH, July 17 It was reported at the Trades’ Hall yesterday that most of the unemployed had got tired of calling there, m view of their past experiences of the hopelessness of getting news of work there. They are stated to he awaiting the result of Sunday’s appeal at Lancaster Park, and at the Opera House, also for details of the Trades Council’s committee’s scheme for the utilisation of the money raised for finding employment for the workless. Men who have been to the country districts looking; for work report at tlie Trades’ Hall that there is none obtainable. One man spent three or four days attempting to got employment in tho country, but 1 witli.no success. He stated that unless a man is known iii the district in which he applies for work, lie has no chance of a job. . ■ . There are between thirty and forty unemployed painters on the union’s employment books at present. There are many indications that the present congested condition, of. the labor market must be speedily relieved. A number of private employers are coming fonvtfrd offering casual work. The offers have been readily accepted. Ike Christchurch Hospital Trustees yesterday signed a contract for the erection of a building to cost £13,000, and as the foundations will be put m hand immediately, a good deal of labor will be absorbed*. Many other building contracts have been let, and it seems that the long lane has reached a turning for the majority'of the unemployed. This morning the Mayor received the following message from the Hon. James Carroll, ' acting-Prime ; Minister, in reply to an inquiry relative to gi anting of Government subsidies on teller funds raised for the unemployed: “Ilie Government is not contributing to any municipal work, either in Wellington or elsewhere.
