One, said to be the ringleader, was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment and a month for getting drunk and not appearing yesterday. Another, described a 3 A. Lamb, was fined 20s. FIRE INSURANCE. The conference of the Underwriters’ Association, sitting in Wellington, today decided that no increase in fire insurance rates be made yet. SUPREME COURT. At the Supreme Court James Hemingway was sentenced t-o five years? on five "charges of breaking, entering, and theft. Prisoner had already undergone sentence. John James O’Connor. for forgery -and uttering, was admitted to probation. John James Driscoll, who was admitted to probation for theft from the City Buffet, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for breach of probation. RAILWAY SERVANTS SOCIETY. Mr. W. A. Veitch, President of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. has challenged Mr. George Brown, President of the Enginemen and Firemen’s Association, to debate the question, “Is it desirable in the interests of locomotive men of New Zealand to form themselves into an association separate from the A.S.R.S.” Mr Veitch wishes to meet Mr. Brown at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill, and will I'r« glad to add other places. HANDBAG LOST OVERBOARDRECOVERED BY DIVER. WELLINGTON, July IS. On Tuesday last, after the arrival pf the s.s. Athenic from London, Miss Bailies, a passenger for Port Chalmers, accidentally dropped a handbag, containing deeds and money, overboard. During the week- the Harbor Board diver made an unsuccessful attempt torecover the bag. This morning Diver Dixon went down and in a few minutes returned to the surface with the missing bag, which has been handed to the secretary of the Harbor Board to await a claimant. OTAGO UNIVERSITY. DUNEDIN, July 17. Degrees and diplomas gained by students- at the Otago University were conferred yesterday- The Hon. C. C. Bowen, who presided, expressed tho opinion that in future all colleges would !>p separate universities, though hedid not expect the change would take place for a few generations. Speeches were also delivered by Mr S. Solomon, K.C., Professor Park, Mr Joynt, and Dr. Johnson. SEWERAGE EXTENSION. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17.
