THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
The Education Department has for years been attempting to bring about a system of centralisation, and now the Minister comes before the public with a suggestion that if local rates were used for educational purposes it would hasten the time when the school committee would be the centre of light and learning in every district of New Zealand. At present the administration of education is free from political influence, and it is only on Veiy rare occasions that we hear of politics being imported into any educational matter. We trust that this will long remain, . but we are much afraid that if the Minister and his able Inspector-,Gener-al are allowed to tinker with the system of administration they will bring about this undesirable state of affairs. “Let well alone” is an old, but very true, saying, and we strongly deprecate any unnecessary mterferenece with the administration of the education of the Dominion.—“Mataura Ensign.”
