COMPENSATION TO LICENSEES. (Per Press Association.' AUCKLAND, July 20. To compesate the licensees of the five city hotels recently closed through the carrying of the reduction vote, the Auckland Licensed Victuallers’ Association recently started a subscription list amongst the trade, with the result that nearly £IOOO has been donated. The amount will be distributed at a gathering at the Chamber of Commerce next Tuesday. • A TIMBER MILL BURNED. Lane and Son’s timber mills at Totara North was destroyed by fire last night. The damage is £ISOO above the insurances, which are not yet ascertainable. The timber stacks and adjoining buildings were saved by heavy rain and the exertions of neighbors. THE SHIP LEICESTER CASTLE. The tug Champion left Sydney yesterday for Auckland to tow back the Leicester Castle, which put in here disabled a fortnight ago. New spars and rigging are being sent from England, and will be fitted in Sydney. 'TILE NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.
PALMERSTON N., July 20. At tlie A. and P. Association meeting to-day, tho report of the National Dairy Show showed that a profit of £3OO had been made upon it. - BULB SHOW AT PALMERSTON. The Manawatu Horticultural Society to-night decided to hold a bulb show here on September 7th and Sth. TEACHERS’ SUPERANNUATION FUND. WELLINGTON, July 20. At a meeting of the Teachers’ Superannuation Fund Board it was reported that the amount to credit of the fund was £102,733. Retiring allowances were granted in four cases and allowances to four widows and seven children. PROPOSED CLOSING OF STAMP OFFICES. CHRISTCHURCH, July 20. Legal practitioners here are strongly opposed to the proposal for the closing of tho Stamp Office, pointing out that the system of assessing and paying death duties at Wellington will lead to delay and unnecessary expense. MR. WRAGGE’S PREDICTION. GORE, July 20. Mr. Wragge wires the “Standard” as follows: The great disturbance Gibb, with his satellites, is affecting tho entire Dominion more or less, in accordance with its physical geography. During tho ensuing four days shipping should use extra caution, as the weather on the coasts is very suspicious, winds betwden N.E., N.W., S.W., and S., with cyclone characteristics generally. ; /
