TO-MORROW’S MATCHES. The hockey to bo played at Victoria Domain to-morrow will be a match between the Auckland representative team possibles and probables, and the ladies’ match. HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. There was a large attendance of members at the usual weekly meeting of the Hockey Association held in the Royal Hotel last night, and the chair was occupied by Mr. G. K. Pasley. The referee in the 'match Civil Service v. Y.M.C.A., played last Thursday, wrote reporting that he Jiad been compelled to order off the field a member of the former club for persistent appealing. After discussion, it was decided 'to ask both player and referee to attend and give evidence at next meeting of the Association. The secretary of the Y.M.C.A Club wrote applying for the use of the Domain to-day to play a match against the Civil Service team. It was decided to grant the application, subject to the approval of the Rugby Union. The secretary of the Auckland Association advised tha-t as time would not permit, the touring team could not visit Gisborne.
The secretary (Mr. J. Doyle) was instructed to wire Auckland asking if it would be possible to arrange a match for Thursday, August sth. If a favorable reply is received, the -local representatives will be selected at once.
Mr. J. J. Martin was appointed to referee the match between the Gisborne and Patutahi ladies, on the Domain to-morrow,, and the Possibles v. Probables match will be controlled by Mr. W. Bushnell. , HOCKEY NOTES. (By “Circle.”) The second round, of the shield competition matches concluded on Thursday last, when City and West End played a ■drawn game, and Y.M.C.A. beat Civil Service by 1 goal to nil. Play was not of a very high-class standard last week, and it is to.be hoped the team that is to go to Auckland will be selected as early as possible, so as to give plenty of time for obtaining practice-and combination, the latter herng most essential if the team hopes to do anything against the northern players. ' ' ‘ . . ( am pleased to see referees taking a firm stand against appeals by players,
and it is to bo expocted that as a result of a player being ordered off for this offence last Thursday, offenders in this respect will be more careful. One team, in particular, is noted for this, and has been very fortunate in not losing the services of some of their best players for indulging in it during the last few matches. - ~
To-morrow the * Patutahi ladies play the Gisborne ladies on the Domain, and the men’s matches have been postponed, so a Possible v. Probable match will tako place instead. It is to be regretted that we are not to have a visit from the Auckland touring team this year, as was expected and promised. This is another effect of the opening of the Alain Trunk railway,, as the team travels by that route instead of by steamer. The team loaves Auckland on August 10, and play . Wanganui on the 12th, Wellington on the 14th, Canterbury 19th, Dunedin 21st, Southland 25th, Manawatu 28th, and probably Taranaki 29th. The local reps, will therefore have to visit Auckland the first week in August. As the season is getting on, it is hoped the local Association will endeavor to obtain a visit from some of the outside adjacent Associations’ representatives, as there is nothing which gives greater stimulus to the game than the visits of these outside teams. A strike of referees is somewhat unof an unusual occurrence, yet such happened in Auckland last month, and lasted for three weeks. It arose through the Hockey Association appointing a person who had ceased to. be a member of the Referees’ Association to be refpree in the most important club match of the season—viz., Auckland v. United. This action was resented by the Referees’ Association, and considered as an insult by its members, so theyi refused to act in any match until a satisfactory explanation was forthcoming. Considerable feeling was introduced into the matter, and the referees were backed up by 90 per cent, of the players, hut matters were eventually smoothed over, and the referees resumed their duties last Saturday.
