THE UNEMPLOYED.
SITUATION IN CHRISTCHURCH
[Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 21. A deputation, numbering about 20, waited on the Mayor to-day, and put forward their claims lor work. His Worship stated that the City Council was doing its utmost with the funds at its command, but at present was spending £SOO per month in labor, and if this rate of expenditure was maintained for six months, heavy rates would have to be levied to make up the deficiency. He advised the deputation to bring more pressure to bear on the local members of Parliament in order to get a Government subsidy. As a result of representations made to-dav to the Mayor by the Rev. J. Mackenzie and Mr. Frank Rule, representing the Presbyterian Social Service Association, the Mayor has decided to call a meeting of representatives of all the agencies in this city engaged in finding relief for the unemployed, either by getting them wor*k or by giving them direct assistance. Ihe fact that different institutions and people are engaged on the same work, but are not acquainted with what each other is doing, has probably led to some cases receiving much more assistance than was warranted by circumstances, whilst' more deserving cases have not received any assistance. It is hoped that some workable scheme, providing for concerted action on the part of the various agencies at work, will ho evolved. |
