PROPOSED LABOR NEWSPAPER.
The Labor party propose to establish a newspaper in Christchurch, because, it is alleged, “the trades .unionists and progressive people generally are of the opinion that they are not getting fair , treatment at the hands of the public "Press at the present juncture; therefore, we ask you to assist in the establishment' of a true Labor paper.” We do not, think that the Labor party could point to an instance where its . members have received unfair treatment in the columns of the metropoli-' tan journals. Each of them lias departments devoted to Labor and edited by prominent members of the party. But it has, of course, a right to establish a newspaper; whether it will be a success or not remains to be seen. In times past New Zealand has had newspapers solely devoted to one cause, > and that the cause of Labor; but they ha ye all disappeared. Theories will, not newspapers. Hard cash, energy, wise, and fairness, but above all support, are required to make spaper a success.—“Mathura

The sawmiling industry in Otago and Southland at present gives employment to about 1000 men. There are in all 70 mills in operation, 60 of these being located in Southland and the remain-; der in the Catlins district. In Catlins the mills are working, constantly, but in Southland there are 10 or 12 mills closed down for want of orders, while of the 60 that are running a large number are only working half-time—-that is, three days in the mill and throe days in the bush.
