King Edward, through Sir Francis Knollys, has expressed much gratification with the metropolitan police for their services, and granted a weekly day of rest.

BLUEJACKETS ENTERTAINED

The Lord Mayor entertained at luncheon 1200 bluejackets and marines at the Guildhall. The men marched, with six twelve-<pounder guns, through the chief thoroughfares. COURT MARTIAL ON A NAVAL OFFICER. (Received July 23, 12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 22. A court martial has been held on the flagship, H.M.S. Powerful, on Lieutenant Ford, first lieutenant of H.M.S. Pioneer, who was charged with desertion. He missed his passage by the Pioneer at Wellington, when the vessel’sailed for Sydney. He- was ordered to lose two years’ seniority, and was dismissed his ship and severely reprimanded. NEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAYS— A RECORD YEAR. For the first time on record the gross earnings for the railway year just ended exceed five million sterling.
