EXCITING MAN HUNT.
THIEF CATCHING IN CHRISTCHURCH.
(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 22. The police had an exciting man hunt last evening. A young fellow had been “wanted” for a fortnight. He Was alleged to have stolen a gramaphone. A sergeant and a constable saw him carrying it, and gave cliase, but lost their man. Afterwards it was learned that he had gone to Kaiapoi. A constable went in pursuit, but* the young fellow saw him, again bolted, and was lost. Yesterday Detective Gibson traced him to a bouse in tho North Avon road, near the city. Four policemen visited the place at ten o’clock last night. A woman answered their, knock, but refused to open the door. The house was closely watched for a time, and when a man answered from within the police demanded admittance. The man denied that Hie person searched for was in the house, and declined to allow a search. He was told that he would be arrested also if he obstructed the police,'.and two constables entered. The rooms were searched fruitlessly, but a skylight was noticed leading to the roof. Constable Boyle got a ladder and tried to remove the skylight, but broke it, and the person wanted was found crouched on a beam across the skylight. He tried to escape by the roof, but was caught by the leg in the attempt and was secured.
