NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, July 22, The New Zealand boxing championships commenced here this evening. Alessrs C. Batt and F. Shaw, of Dunedin. were the judges, and Air R. Cook, of Timaru. was referee. ‘ The firstrounds were not concluded a midnight. In bantams, Campbell beat Neiligan on points after three hard-fourglit bouts, and We mi an knocked out Baldwin in the first round after 85 seconds hard kitting. In the feather-weights the judge,. at the close of three bouts between Leckie and Cairns, declared a draw, and gave a verdict to the Otago man after a- hard-fought fourth bout. Porter got a right cross on to Finnerty in the first bout, and the latter was counted out after fighting 1 minute 40 seconds. In light-weights, Saunders succumbed in the first round. The crowd took the judge’s decision in the Smitli-Newall round very badly, hooting and yelling, and losing sight of the fact- that the decision was obviously given for skill in boxing. In the fourth bout between Ross and O’Connor, the decision went to the former on points. Finncrty upper-cut. Fulton in the first bout, and he was counted out. In welters. Penberthv got a right cross on to Edwards in the second bout, and lie was counted out, A fourth bout was necessary in Cooper versus Alanly, in middle-weights, and the former won on points. Light-weights:—First Round—Thomson (Canterbury) beat- W. Saunders (Otago); W. J. Smith (Wellington) beat V. Newall (Southland); Ross (Auckland) beat T. O'Connor (Otago): J. H.
