The condition of the wicket was fair. Macartney and Cotter opened the bowling for Australia against Wilson and Rhodes. Macartney bowled with accurate length. Cotter tried the off theory, the crowd ironically cheering. The batsmen showed little enterprise, taking 75 minutes to compile half a century. When he .had scored 33, Rhodes made an awkward attempt to off-drive Cotter. Hopkins. at square-leg, missed the catch. A dozen runs later he remedied the mistake bv' capturing Rhodes’ wicket. The next two 'wickets fell at 97, Cotter disposing of Wilkinson when the latter had scored 5. Cotter disposed of Hardisty with the first ball. The Sydney bowler was showing great pace. Hirst and Rothery became partnered. The former batted hi a lively manner, and knocked 13 off one oyer of Macartney’s. The century was hoisted in 155 minutes. When the total had reached 127, Rothery. retired leg before wicket to Cotter. Four runs later Broadbent was taken at second slip. Seven, for 131. Hirst and Newstead carried the total to 172. The innings, which lasted 215 minutes,-’ was then declared closed. Hirst, by resolute play, batted for 75 minutes. He scored six fours. Newstead gave a chance to Trumper when he had scored 6. ~

Bowling analysis: Cotter 5 for 44, Armstrong 0 for 47, Macartney 1 for 40, Hopkins 1 for 38. At one time after lunch Cotter had a record of-5 for 21.
