CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A [FETING OF EXECUTIVE. A. meeting of the Executive of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon in the Borough Council Chambers. Present Messrs John Townley (chairman), A. S. Wachsmann, A. Dewing, AY. A. u’Meara, F. W. Riach, T. E. Toneycliffc, J. B. Kells, E. W. Burton, and F. H. AV. Traill (secretary). Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs J. R. Kirk; W. Lissant Clayton, and AY. L. Rees. A letter was received from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce asking for the names of any Gisborne delegates to the seventh congress of Chambers of Commerce, to bo held there on September 23rd. A list of hotels and boarding houses was enclosed.—Received. Air. W. Richards, hon. secretary of the AA 7 aioeka Settlers’ Association, Opotiki, wrote stating that a. letter had been sent t-o the Minister for Roads urging him to push on the work of the stock track up the Opato stream from the AVaioeka to Matawai. The letter claimed that the track would be of great benefit to the settlens, bringing them 75 miles nearer Gisborne for stock driving purposes. The co-operation of the Chamber was asked towards getting a grant. On the motion of the chairman it was resolved that the request be supported )V the Chamber, several members expressing their opinion of the great importance of the work. The secretary of tho Hastings Chamber of Commerce wrote asking if the Chamber intended to take any action regarding high Government valuations. It was resolved to reply thanking the Hastings Chamber for the letter, and expressing sympathy with the question. Mr. A. S. AVachsmann, acting for Air. AA 7 . L. Rees, moved the following resolution —“That in view of the harm which would bo done to this district and to the whole Dominion by the proposed centralisation of the Stamps and Deeds Department, this Chamber sends a letter to Dr. Findlay .strongly protesting against the proposed change. The Chariman, in seconding the motion, said that the matter had been objected to all over the Dominion, and the proposal, if carried, would cause great inconvenience and delay. . After discussion,* during, which several members expressed their disapproval of the proposed change, the secretary was instructed to write to tho Alinister as suggested in the motion:
