FAMOUS EXPLORER’S ADVENTURE.
A well-known Asiatic explorer, Dr. M. A. Stein, related a startling adventure at the Livingstono College Commemoration at Leyton. He had to make certain -observations and obtain photographs at a high altitude in the Himalayas, and stood for the time beam on a glacier. Owing to the cold and the danger of spending the night in such a position he hurried as much as possible over the work and did n-ot observe that his feet had become benumbed. When, however, lio reached his encampment he found that some of the toes of the right foot were frostbitten. Adopting the first-aid remedies, be instructed bis servants to construct a litter, on which they carried him a 17 days’ journey to the Moravian Mission at Leh. In the meantime ho had despatched runners to Dr Schmitt, tlie missionary, informing him of Ins own approach and condition. ,Dr. Schmitt} had himself been unwell and was then not thoroughly recovered, but he started off immediately to meet the explorer, which he did at an altitude of 14,000 ft, and conducted him to the station, where he. successfully performed the operation of amputating the frostbitten toes. Dr. Stein further stated that since his return hq had consulted eminent medical authorities, who assured him that the task had been most skilfully undertaken.
