Mantua, the first English vessel travelling to .Australia carrying the Marconi apparatus, arrived at Fremantle on July 6. The instrument has a range of 250 miles. During the voyage the operator flashed messages each day, and when the mail steamer emerged from tlie Bed Sea the first vessels greeted were •two Japanese merchant steamers, which were scores of miles out of sight, and which returned felicitations and greetings. Then an English man-o’-war, prowling about the shallows of the' Seychelles Islands, sent back a hearty businesslike message. Between Tilbury and Port Said passengers sent messages ashore to- their friends. It was a novelty, and although costing about Is per word, with a minimum charge of 6s 6d, the luxury was largely availed of. The latest battleships are of peculiar interest} ’on' account ot the extent to which electricity is utilised in them (says the London “Daily Telegraph”). In the Temeraire is it used so considerably for various purposes that there is I something approaching 140 miles' of electric wire and no. fewer than 130 motors. This ship carries searchlights equal to 4,000,000 candle-power, and the vessel’s wireless apparatus carries iloo miles. The coal capacity is 2100 tons, and the consumption is about 500 tons j)er day at full speed. She carries . a very powerful 'armament, consisting of ten 12in guns of the Mark X pattern, and sixteen 4in quick-firers. The big guns are carried in turrets, two in each. Each turret weighs about 400 tons, and is protected with I2in armor, while each gun weighs about 58 tons. • And lias a supply of eighty rounds of ammunition, 8501 b shells. To work the guns the hydraulic pressure used is 10001 b to the square inch. The following version of the mishap to tlie Manuka is reported in a Melbourne exchange :—-Whilst the Union liner Manuka was leaving the Bluff for Melbourne, via Hobart, she struck a submerged obstruction with such force that tire shock was plainly felt throughout the vessel. As far as could be judged, however, she escaped serious injury, and therefore proceeded on her frip •without interrruption, arriving in Melbourne after a smart-run of hours from Hobart. It was then decided to send down a diver to make an examination of the vessel’s bottom, and subsequently the Manuka was floated into Duke’s dry dock for repairs. Although it was found that the ship was making a little water, her injuries are said to be comparatively slight, so that . the necessary Tepairs should not occupy much time.
