Makepace, News toad, and Rysbi'ce replaced Sharp (indhposed) and Hirst in the English team. The weather was dull, and the wicket soft. Hornby won the toss. Spooner exhibited bright play. He commenced by hitting three tourers off Macartney, but Hartley lost his wicket in trying to pull ~ ball from Laver. One for 36. Changes in the bowling did not deter Spooner scoring freely. By attractive cricket his half century was compiled in Go minutes. Denton opened quickly. Light rain began to fall and delayed the game for 15 minutes. Both batsmen kept at the wickets up to lunch. After more showers the weather brightened. The second over after lunch disposed of Spooner. He put up an easy catch to mid-off, hit off a kicking ball. His innings was marked by fine driving. The score included six fourers. Two for 130. Tyidesley joined Denton, but did not stay long, Denton doing most of tho scoring. Three for 138. Denton, who batted with freedom, gave a soft one to Trumper in the slips. He batted for 105 minutes. He gave a chance when at 31. He hit six tourers. Four for 137. Rhodes, with neat all-round play, scored quickly. The second century was registered in 190 minutes.
A downpour of rain stopped play and stumps were drawn. Makepeace was missed in the slipy when at 15 by Trumper off Hopkins.
THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM—PRO POSED VISIT TO WANGANUI.
(Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, July 30. A. meeting of cricket enthusiasts this evening considered a proposal of the New Zealand Cricket Council re financing a visit to Wanganui of the Australian team, and decided to solicit subscriptions in order to secure a match. A sum of £24 was subscribed Jr. the room.
