SYDNEY THEATRE ON FIRE.
HER MAJESTY’S THEATRE NARROWLY ESCAPES DESTRUCTION. DAMAGE £3OOO. United Press Association—Copyright (Received Aug. 2. 12.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 1. Her Majesty’s Theatre had a narrow escape from destruction by fire to-day. A fire started in the gallery'and spread, upwards to the dome. When the brigade arrived the gallery was well alight, but within 25 minutes it was extinguished. The damage by fire and water is estimated at £3OOO. The theatre will be closed for a fortnight. The origin of the fire is a mystery. When the night.watchman went off duty this morning there was no trace of fire. Five hours later smoke was seen issuing from the building.
