POVERTY BAY CLUB. During the week, interest has been kept up by matches in the A and B tournament and the Mixed Foursome competition. On Thursday afternoon there was a somewhat high wind blowing, but tho weather • otherwise was good. In the Mixed Foursome tournament, Airs Morgan and M 7. R. Barker (3) met Miss Sweet and W. Gibson (4), und an interesting game ended in favor of the first-named couple by 3 up and 1 to play. The game was all-square at the 14th, hut Mrs. Morgan and her partner, by steady and consistent play, won the next three holes running. H. Barker (14) and W. A. O’Meara (16) also played off the semi-final m the B tournament on Thursday afternoon, and the game provided a keen ,ahd exciting match. O’Meara was 2 up at the 16th, but Barker took the next two holes, and they were all square at the 18tb. They played off the sth to decide the match, and O’Meara just got home by 4 to 5, after a very even-]v-contested match. * There was a large crowd out on baturday afternoon, and some interesting matches were played off- Afternoon-tea was provided by the Misses Tucker (*) ;and Schumacher. J. H. Bull (scr.) and W. J. Cbirnside <4) met in the A tournament. Both men played fine golf, but'Bull was .on 'the .top of his game and won by 2 up. The winner’s short play was well nigh
perfect, and contributed largely to his victory'. ' 1 ' - ;v ~ W. B. Willock (scr.) and F. TV. Nolan (scr.) met in the semi-final of the B tournament. The veteran was in cajiital form, and, though Nolan played steadily, he had no chance against Ail-lock; who took the match by 5 up and’ 4 to play. TV. B. Willock ( scr.) and TV. A. O’Meara (16) have to fight out tho final in the B tournament, and an exciting game should result. Tho following matches were played in the Mixed Foursome tournament:—
Miss Nolan and F. T. Morgan (9) beat Miss McLean and G. Bradley-Smith (14) 3 up. Mrs Willock and G. M. Dodgsliun (2) boat Mrs Cole and N. Bull (3), 3 up and ,2 to play. Miss Bull and P. The four new holes, on the no.rth side of Childer’s road, were played ovor by the majority of those who were out on Saturday, and general satisfaction was expressed with the sporting nature of the country. ' When the greens are in order the new holes will be a great improvement on those on tho flat near the Awapnni, which were unplayable in wot weather.
Mr F. H. TV. Traill, tho popular secretary of the Club, was present on the links on Saturday, and came in for general condolences on his recent accident. It was extremely hard luck on this player’s part to break his arm on the eve of the Gisborne Club’s trip to Napier with the object of trying to win the Wilson shield from tho holders. Traill had come on to his game well just prior to his accident, and his defection will greatly weaken the strength of tho Gisborne team.
