The pontoons of what is described ■ as the largest gold dredge in the world were successfully launched at Waikaka r alley, 12 miles from Gore, on Saturday afternoon. The dimensions of the dredge will be: ‘Length 130 ft, breadth 28ft, depth Bft. It is being built by Messrs MacGteorge Bros, to dredge deep . leads to 50ft and further, if found necessary. It will cost from £9OOO to ! £IO.OOO, and will lift 180 tons per hour. Speaking to an “Ensign”_ rdpresenta- ; tive, Mr. J. Mac George said, “It is no experiment. The ground has been too well prospected for that.” This being ■ so, it will prolong the life of the industry in the district for another 20 years. ■ch of the ground already dredged ’ will bo turned over again. It was only recently that these deeper leads were l found to oxist. They are believed to [ bold gold never disturbed by stream " tribution. The result is awaited t with considerable interest.
