DEATH DUTIES.

There is no sound reason why we in 'New Zealand should tax estates heavily simply because John Bull does so. His requirements are very great., and the impost he levies is made necessary by the exigencies of the situation he finds himself in by his. system of direct taxation, and by a punctiliousness we are yet free from in regard to the -payment ;of his debts. Should the occasion arise when it is necessary for us in New Zealand to reduce the mesh in the dragnet of taxes, it will be most useful to remember the lesson Dr Findlay haj been teaching. Its details are decidedly instructive. —Wellington “Times.” rPTm i r 4 ,TT7^'VT r n
