HENNIKER HEATON’S STATEMENTS. THEIR ACCURACY CHALLENGED. United Press Association— Copyright. (Received August 3, 11.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, August 3. In connection with Mr. Henniker Heaton’s suggestion, that the expenditure of the British and Colonial Governments on cablegrams would pay the interest on the capital necessary to purchase the cables, doubt has been expressed on the point. A return piepared for tho year ended 31st December shows that, while 1,188.100 words were sent by tho Australian public over the Pacific line, the Government only sent' 23,291 words, representing £1892. Ordinary messages received in Australia by the same route totalled 961,579 words, and Government messages 26,029 words.
