BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING IN COMMITTEE. A sjjecial meeting of tho Borough Council, in committee, was held last night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr. W. D. L-snar), and Ors. Kirk, Maynard, Darton, Clayton, Collins, Somervell, Smith, Pettie, and Harris. The first matter set down for consideration was the request of the medical profession regarding the payment of foes by the Charitable Aid Board in connection with indigent cases. In this matter, a communication was read from the medical men, stating their wish to withdraw the request, as it was thought that misunderstanding might arise. In consequonce of this letter, the matter was not discussed. Tho terms and conditions of tho proposed engagement of. Mr. F. W. Marchunt to superintend tho installation of a drainage system, in the event of a loan being sanctioned by the ratepayers, were discussed, anu the Council came to a unanimous decision on the matter. The question of the suspension of the waterworks contract, and the contractors’ Request' for a progress payment, were next dealt with. After considerable discussion, it was decided that no further payment be made until the satisfactory completion of tho work, and that tlio contractors be allowed to temporarily suspend operations, on a proper deed being drawn up, on the same conditions under which they, were allowed to suspend the work last year. These conditions include the provision that a man be left in charge of the works to repair any damage to the pipe line, failing which the Council would repair tho damage at the contractors’ expense. The question of establishing a “Lux” light in Victoria Township was next considered, and it was eventually decided that a light be erected on Awapuni road off the end of Grey Street. The arlvisableness of purchasing an automatic road-sweeping liorse-powcr machine wrft next considered, and after discussion it was decided to procure such a machine if the Overseer was satisfied that it was the best article that could be procured for the work. The proceedings were somewhat protracted, and the meeting did not conclude until a few minutes before midnight.
