THE POLICE COMMISSION
SITTING AT WESTPORT
IPer Presb Association.! WESTPORT, August 5. The Police Commission arrived here at 6 p.m. overland from Reefton, and sat in the evening. Evidence was given by Leonard Coe‘kery, licensee of the Royal Hotel, but formerly a policeman, that lie was m the service from 1898 to 1907, leaving with a good character, but because be had not served ten years he got no refund from the provident fund, whereas a constable dismissed 'from the service would be entitled to a refund of contributions. Witness also stated that a constable should be better paid, should receive additional uniform, and better house and travelling allowances, and on leaving the service be given bis merit list for use, if need be, as a character in the event of applying for a position elsewhere. Constable Reid, on behalf of the police of ' the 1 district, brought several complaints before the Commission, principally against alleged unfair promotions. He himself had no complaint. Sergeant Dew also gave evidence, the burden of his complaint being that chief defectives are given preference over, uniformed sergeants for Rub-in spoctova.tes, the witness considering that detectives should rank in a different branch of the service, - The Commission will leave for Nelson to-morrow morning.
