AN EXAGGERATED REPORT.

It Avill be a matter for satisfaction that the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board has felt justified in giving an emphatic denial to the alarming tatemouts made by Mr. A. C. Bennett 1 at the last meeting, of the Board. Mr. Bennett had complained of laxity on the part of the Rabbit Inspectors, and affirmed that the pest existed in numbers in various parts of the district. He claimed also that the Inspectors’ reports were indefinite and misleading. When asked by other, members to make a specific charge, Mr. Bennett refused to do so, but ultimately agreed to discuss the matter privately with the Chairman. We presume that this discussion has taken place, and that Mr. Mcllardy’s statement at Hastings yesterday is the outcome. That gentleman certainly lias no interest in belittling the danger that exists as the result of the march of the'rabbit into the Hawke’s Bay district, and we can confidently accept his assurance that Mr. Bennett has overstated the position. The matter is of considerable interest to local pastoralists, for any neglect on tho part of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board to do its share in keeping the post down might easily lead to disastrous results in our own ckstrict.
