Tho Brisbane tramways award came into operation on July Ist, and is a big advance on the old working conditions. There is no Tramways Union at Brisbane; instead, there is an organisation called the Brisbane Tramways Employees’ Association, with a membership of 460. to the secretary of which I am indebted for some particulars of the new working conditions. The hours of labor are not to exceed 61 per week of six days, without overtime being paid of time and a-quarter. The rate of wages to be: First and second years’ service, not less than 10id per hour; third and fourth Years’ service and thereafter, not less than Is Id per .hour. Motormen, conductors, and signalmen receive one suit of uniform every eight months, one cap every twelve months, free travel to and from duty when in uniform, IS free coupon passes every ten days, one coupon being good for one division. There is no holiday allowance, but, instead, there is an excursion car for employees and their friends and families during tho summer months, one each week alternately at each depot, there being three depots This scale does not came up to that or the Auckland tramways award, as a man has to bo five years in the service *o receive the maximum wage of Is Id, which is reached in the Auckland service after three years.
