THE AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND. THE FIFTH TEST. United Press Association — Corntiuin LONDON, Aug. 9. Tho fifth test match was commenced to-day on the Oval. In their first innings the 'Australians made 325, the scores being:—

Total 325 Bowling analysis: Carr 5 for 145, Barnes 2 for 58, Sharp 3 for 67, Woolley 0 for 6, Hayes 0 for 10, Rhodes 0 for 34. Tho weather was fine and hot. The wicket was fast. Noble won the toss. Buckenham and Blythe were ommitted. There were 25,000 spectators. The Prince of Wales and his children were present. The Australians made an unpromising start. Carr and Barnes opened the bowling. Carr, in the second over, with a log break, ' removed Gregory’s off stump after he had scored a single. One for 9. Bardsley was in great form. He hit a 1 sixer and got four for an oyer-throw from Hayes, Lilley blundering with the ball. The Sydneyite was playing the Kentish bowler skillfully. Noble got leg before to Carr in the fourth over. Two for 27. Sharp replaced Barnes shortly after the first wicket fell, -and the latter came_ on again, at 35, the second over' yielding 10. Fifty appeared in 45 minutes, Bardsley having contributed. 36, compiled by masterly driving and leg hitting. Armstrong, playing back, got leg before in Carr’s seventh over. He was nearly stumped first Ball, but afterwards- inproved. Three for 55. Hansford was disposed of with a splendid ball in the third over he received from Barnes. Four for 58. Trumper joined Bardsley. This was a fine partnership. The bowling was good, and the fielding fair, but Carr was losing his length. Barnes was bowling steadily. Woolley relieved the latter at 90. Hayes replaced Carr. The change did not trouble the batsmen. Trumper opened carefully. The total of 100 was recorded in 100 minutes. Bardsley was showing faultless play. Sharp succeeded Hayes at 100. Seven were obtained off his first over. Trumper hit three fourers and one five for an on drive, and hit Carr for four. Woolley t-ook the ball, but came off after the" first over, the adjournment being made for luncheon. On resuming the bowling was frequently changed without effect. There was brilliant fielding on the part of Haves, Rhodes, and Hutchens. Rhodes relieved Carr at 166. Bardsley gave a chance at 77 in the slips to Maclaren off' Rhodes’ second ball. Trumper then tried to pull Barnes, and was taken neatly by Rhodes, very low. He batted for 110 minutes, giving a chance when he had scored 48, to Barnes, at mid-off, off Carr. He made .a fine display all round, hitting a fiver and eight fourers. Five for 176. Macartney filled the - vacancy. Bardsley put up his century in 190 minutes, playing magnificent cricket. The newcomer hit a couple of fourers off Carr and began to score quickly. Rapid changes in the bowling then took place. Bardsley then played Sharp on. He displayed splendid, all-round defence. He hit a sixer, 12 fourers, five threes, and 11 twos. He was at the wickets for 225 minutes. Six for 259. Hopkins went- in next. Macartney was nearlv run out at 20, but a bad return ■by Sharp saved him. After tea Hopkins was taken easily at third slip by Rhodes off Sharp. Seven for 289. The third century appeared in 260 minutes. Cotter jumping out for a drive at a hall from Carr lost his wicket. Eight for 300. Carter, with the addition of four to the aggregate, got out leg before wicket to Carr. Laver, the last man, made 8, when the Sydneyite gave a catch to Rhodes off Sharp. Macartney batted for two hours, playing excellent cricket. Spooner, at- cover point, and HuL chins, at deep field, fielded magnificently throughout. Fry, not out ••• 3 The first wicket fell for 15. Maclaren got his leg in front of a full pitched ball from Cotter. Two for 36. Stumps were then drawn for the day.
