JULY EXPORTS.

- —* ——— r VALUES SUBSTANTIALLY l INCREASED. e The return of exports of principal ' products for the month of July, as prepared by the Industries and Commerce Department, makes a most satisfactory showing' when compared with the month of July, 1908. The total value for the moiith for the principal exports from all parts of New Zea- ® land was’ £1,274,622, or an increase of ■j. £372,887 on the values of exports or 1 staples for the correspondnigv period ' of 1908. The position is made clear > on comparison of the following figures l for. July. Those for 1909 are taken .from, interim returns, and are subject to correction: , ’ 1909 1908/

Taking some of the- items, it will he found that butter shows a large falling off in value, but the position today with regard to this staple is that prices are not so attractive in London as they were this time last year, when the quantify usually available for domestic requirements was heavily drawn upon for the London market. Cheese shows an increase, as was only to be ■expected. Prices for frozen meat ruling so low ,at Home will in some sort account for the falling off in these lines, but the stric’k is here alive all the same, and if prices improve very heavy shipments will go Home next season. What has been lost to New Zealand on meat has been made up to a large measure by wheat, as the above figures will show. Poultry might be well disappear off the export column altogether. It is not that the birds aro "not here, but that the local market can take all the birds and eggs that can be produced, and at prices profitable to the raisers. Exports of oats and other grains show substantial increases, and kauri gum an Aueklnad ‘Mine,” displays a very large increase. Hops are coming again, as may been seen. Hides, skins, and tallow combined bid fair to double their values, iPid wool is but a trifle under.
