MOTU-V ALLEY SETTLERS AS-

,Thc Motif-Valley Settlers (Matawai) Association held their eleventh monthly meeting at Mr. Buscke’s residence on Saturday 7th inst. This local .body is one of the most energetic in the Bay, and through this Association the Valley settlers are kept quite up-to-date. They ■all have a splendid telephone line (latest machines/ besides j their twiceweekly mail service. The settlers pay a subsidy tq support this system. They have pushed the dray road on in a very brisk manner, and now there are three gangs of men forming this road as far as-Mr. Korte’s, The Association, when first formed, built a goods shed by Mr. Flemmings (then terminus of the road) and now for this year’s carting it has to he shifted four miles further on to where the, present terminus is. Those present at last meeting were: Messrs. F. H. Buscke, Wray, Baird, Pigott. Simson, Korte, Bulst, Johnston, Haisman and B riant. Mr. Baird presided. After correspondence had been read which included some very important matters about mail services and .a dispute with last summer’s carter, the meeting went off in a very brisk discussion over mail matters, and on the motion of Mr. Pigott, seconded by Mr. Baird, it was decided to be drawn up for signature to bo presented to the nostmaster, asking for arrangements for different mail days before the new Rakauroa-Matawai-Gisborhe mail service began. Discussion then went on to matters pertaining to roads and bridges, and it was decided to write asking the County Council to pay half the cost of a surface man to look after the track and the dray road. _ . It was also decided to •write, on Mr. Briant’s proposal, to the Education Department, to see if they would throw open for . lease the 2000 acres of Educational reserve next to Mr. Briant’s. Tiie secretary was also 'requested to write to Mr. W. D. S. MacDonald, ALP. about bridges to Mr. Baird’s and Mr. Johnson’s sections.
A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Buscke for providing afternoon tea, after which the meeting adjourned.
MATAWAI SPORTS CLUB
A fully attended meeting of the above club was held on Saturday, 7th inst., at Mr. Neal’s store. Those present’were Messrs. Buscke (chairman), C. and W. H. Neal, J. B. Clark, R. Flemming, H. and F. Korte, J. Mackenzie, and H. Bulst. Re their surplus money in Gisborne Savings Bank, it was decided to withdraw it at an early date, placing the same in the sccrctarv’s name. As to fixing the date of sports; Mr. J. B. Clark stated that in fixing the day he thought they should take the shearing time into consideration. On a-motion put by Mr. Flemming, seconded bv Mr.’F. Korte. it was decided to hold the sports on the 14th, January, 1910. Mr. Buvcke proposed that a programme committee to be elected, Air. W. H. Neal seconded, in electing Messrs. J. B. Clarke, J. Mackenzie, and F. H. Buscke. Air. Mackenzie said be did not care to take it on this year’s handicapping as he got into “licit water” last year with the young ladies. This matter was left till next meeting. It- was decided to hold a dance in aid of the sport’s club on Ist October, the following dance committee being elected:—Messrs. J. B. Clark, H. Bulst, S. V. Beaupy, J. Mackenzie, F. Korte, W. H. Neal, and H. Korte. A vote of thanks to Mr. Neill, who kindly provided a supper, and also to the Chairman (Mr. Buscke) completed the meeting.
